A breast lift can
rejuvenate your figure by restoring the position and shape that is often lost as
gravity takes its toll. In breast lift surgery, also called mastopexy,
the breasts are raised, the nipples are repositioned and the areolas may be
reduced in size. The breast lift procedure raises and recontours loose, sagging
breasts. Frequently, a woman elects this surgery after losing a considerable
amount of weight, or losing volume and tone in her breasts after having
children. If you have lost breast volume over the years and you want more
fullness, implants may be inserted during the breast lift surgery to increase
breast size.
A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure buy restoring the lift and shape that
it is often lost as gravity takes its toll.
You may be a good
candidate for a breast lift if you have any of the following conditions:
- Breasts are
pendulous, but are a size that is satisfactory to you
- Breasts lack
substance or firmness
- Nipples and
areolas point downward, especially if they are positioned below the breast
crease.
How is a
breast lift performed?
The specific method chosen for your breast lift will be determined by your
anatomy, Dr. Graham's preferences and your desired results.
In a breast lift procedure, Dr. Graham relocates the nipple and areola to
a higher position, repositions the breast tissue to a higher level, removes
excess skin from the lower portion of the breast and then reshapes the remaining
breast skin. If you have lost breast volume over the years and you want to add
more fullness, implants may be inserted during breast lift surgery to increase
breast size
The most common
method of breast lift involves three incisions. One incision is made around the
areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease
underneath the breast. The third is a horizontal incision beneath the breast
that follows the natural curve of the breast crease.
After the surgeon has removed the excess breast skin and shaped the remaining
breast tissue, the nipple and the areola are shifted to a higher position. The
areola can also be reduced in size. Skin that was formerly located above the
areola is brought down and together to reshape the breast.
Breasts that are not sagging significantly can be lifted with smaller incisions,
leaving smaller and fewer scars. Overall, the result may be firmer, higher, more
youthful looking breasts.
If you have large breasts that limit your physical activity and
cause pain, breast reduction may be right for you. Breast reduction surgery
removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in
proportion with a woman's body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with
overly large breasts. In general, breast reduction surgery will not only correct
the functional symptoms associated with large breasts, but will also result in
better proportioned breasts, enhancing a woman's body image and self-confidence.
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of
large pendulous breasts that are disproportionate to a woman's body and can
cause physical pain. Technically called reduction mammoplasty, breast reduction
improves breast size, shape and the associated conditions of large breasts that
include:
-
back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of excess
breast tissue
-
shoulder discomfort and indentation from bra straps that
support heavy, pendulous breasts
-
restricted physical activity due to breast size and the
associated discomfort
-
skin irritation beneath the breast crease
-
sagging, stretched skin and a low breast profile where, when
unsupported, the nipple rests below the breast crease
-
an enlarged areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple)
caused by stretched skin
Breast reduction can be performed unilaterally (on one breast)
or bilaterally (on both breasts). It is generally considered a reconstructive
procedure and maybe covered by health insurance when it is performed to
relieve medical symptoms. Many insurers define breast reduction surgery as
reconstructive based on the amount of tissue that will be removed. However,
pre-certification is often required for reimbursement or coverage.
Breast reduction surgery can be performed at any age; however it
is best performed when the breasts are fully developed. Because significant
amounts of breast tissue are removed, breast reduction surgery may impair the
ability to breast feed. changes in the breast during pregnancy can alter the
outcomes of previous breast reduction surgery, as can significant weight
fluctuations.
A consultation with Dr. Graham is the first step to learn how
breast reduction can improve the appearance of your breasts and relieve pain,
discomfort and any associated symptoms you may have resulting from large,
pendulous breasts.
